Gig Review for The Reveurs, France, The Leathernecks & Ook and the Elephant - Night & Day Cafe

Night & Day Cafe Gig Review - Saturday 5th of December 2015

It was a busy night in Manchester as people were out on Christmas Do's and also Manchester Markets were on. The venue for the event being Night & Day Café, 26 Oldham Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 1JN presented by Scruff of the Neck records . Based out of Manchester, Scruff of the Neck Records are an independent record label and music collective with their ears to the ground and their eyes to the future.  The indie label are also reputable Manchester gig promoters,  a music management company and specialists in various creative outlets which are now integral for the development of artists.  A tireless work ethic has seen the label grow exponentially in both size, and reputation over the course of the last few years, and as a result they’re rapidly becoming one of the go-to grass-roots labels in the Manchester.

 Ook and the Elephant

Unfortunately I was delayed getting to the gig so missed the first act, which was Ook and the Elephant. Lucky for me I tracked down a number of their songs on the internet and was blown away. This is a very unusual band.

This is the blurb for the band;

"Ook and the Elephant like to start most of their practices with a BBQ. When the weather no longer permits, we move indoors for our pre-rehearsal feasting. We like to foist our music on unsuspecting ears in strange and beautiful places. We love to shake your bones and make you want to stomp, whilst eating something comforting. We are made for live performances and shared experiences. From melodic stomp to nu-folk, our sound is peculiar, tribal with contrapuntal melodies. Recent comparisons suggest Jefferson Airplane, The Decemberists, Tom Waits and Arcade Fire. The reality of the sound exists in the interstices of these, and we hope it is our own."

The line up for the band is made up of: Don Mccoll- Singer and  bass player.
Emily Cooke-singer. Danny Hodgson- lead guitarist, and last but not least

Adam Smethurst on drums. The band are from Bolton.

The set list that they played went like this -

Oh Celia
Gaps
House in Munich
Start a Fire

Honey & Bile review of Celia 2015

So it seems like Lanegan & Orton have some competition – and there I was thinking it was a particularly niche market!  Starts off as a mouse-like sleepy folk tale before metamorphosing into a riff heavy monster.  Kept my interest through the winding 7 minute journey!’
Another review by Right Chord Music can be found HERE
They decided that Night and Day would be their last gig until March; as they want to spend some time getting properly stuck into some writing, rather than trying to squeeze things in between gigs.

Next up to play were

The Leathernecks

Influenced by the likes of Kings of Leon, Two Door Cinema Club, Editors, Foals, The Hives, Foo Fighters, Findlay, The View; and a band not out of place amongst that list.

This band from Rotherham started out (as many bands do) playing in a five piece Indie/Rock covers band. After a few years of playing together up and down the UK and throughout Europe four members decided to have a go at doing some of their own stuff... in late 2013 The Leathernecks were born, fronted by Guitarist Nick Wild who brings a 'very Sheffield' vocal to the mix. His style is often compared to the likes of Milburn and Arctic Monkeys with a sprinkling of Courteeners very own Liam Fray added in for good measure.

"A rip-roaring angst fuelled scorcher of an EP from The Leathenecks."

 Ryan Oxley-PenistoneFM

The band are in general fast paced, upbeat and very energetic, drawing on clear influences from The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and The Libertines with obvious comparisons emerging towards Sheffields Milburn and The Courteeners. All blended together to give a new, yet also very familiar sound. Having honed their skills playing covers together over the years and with a full repertoire of original songs in the locker, these four lads are working hard to put their own stamp on the Sheffield Indie Music Scene. Building on the release of their debut track Bunny Boiler in June 2014 and with their debut EP released on 19th March 2015, it is looking like a busy year already for these lads.

The band line up is Nick Wild, Adam Manning, Matt Johnson and James Burton

Set List

Two Timing
What we did
Winter
Borderline
Do Ya Fuck
Another Day
Wasabi
BEAST
Bunny Boiler

They have an EP out now available via their website
called "What's It Gonna Be?"

This is "Another Day"

Their next gig is at The Queens Hotel, Rotherham on the 11th of December at 7.30 pm

You can find the lads on Twitter, FacebookSoundcloudYoutubeInstagram and their website.

Brilliant energetic band, well worth listening to. I particularly loved Another Day and Bunny Boiler.
All the songs were toe tappers and made you want to get up and dance.
Hoping to see the lads again next time they are in town.

Next up were

FRANCE

France are a three piece Pop/Rock band who were founded in November 2013.
They originate from Rochdale, and their music consists of prominent punchy bass riffs, rhythmic beats, harmonised melodies and sing-along lyrics.

Members of the band are Joel Murphy on Guitar and Vocals, Liam Dodd on Bass / Vocals

and finally Joe Weetman on the  Drums

Set list for the evening was:
The Northerner
Nothing New
Hazard
Til the end
Chasing You
Always been the one
Your love
Actus Reus
4am

I loved the vocals and they did some fabulous harmonies. They played a great mixture of tunes. The audience tapping their feet and singing along throughout the bands performance. A band I would go and see again, with pleasure.

You can find France on TwitterFacebookSoundcloudYoutube and their website.

Then we came to the headline act of the evening

The Reveurs

By the end of the evening night & Day was packed and everyone was ready to party.
The Reveurs are obviously a very popular group, ( and rightly so). The audience knew the words to the vast majority of the songs off by heart, and danced their little socks off.
There was an amazing atmosphere in the venue for when the headliners finally took to the stage. This continued to build throughout resulting in shouts for more, and an encore.

The Reveurs are a four piece Indie Rock band from Manchester The line up of the band consists of Gary Nelson - Vocals/Guitar,  Iain Brewster - Backing Vocals/Guitar, Adam Molyneux - Backing Vocals/Bass and last, but once again not least, Ben Devenport on Drums.

The band combine a stoic rhythm section with melodic riffs and feel good lyrics, The Reveurs are setting the stage for the next wave of Indie Rock.
In late 2013, Gary, Iain, Adam and Ben formed The Reveurs, set on transforming the Manchester Indie scene. Channeling Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, The Reveurs add a story to each of their tracks, leading an intriguing narrative through a guitar driven, energetic collage of music.

“As they state on their Facebook page their sole purpose is to; "write and perform anthemic tunes that will stick in your head." And that is something they have achieved “

Mixtape Couture

The energy on stage was palpable, and the atmosphere pretty electric. Doesn't harm that the guys are a handsome bunch to boot. No doubt about it, they are a young group about to make a big name for themselves - one to watch.

Set list

Harriet
Take a Bow
Saint Marie
Delay
Afterglow
Take It Over (Single release)
Radio
Faithless War
Control

This gig was a celebration of the launch of their debut music video 'Take It Over'

Fantastic music video and a great song to boot, please take a gander below and see what I mean.

“They only formed towards the end of 2013, however, they’ve made a good start and provided an impressive set. They played to arguably the biggest audience I’ve seen in Night and Day since the end of last year as well, bringing with them many fans who got right behind them, The Reveurs will grow and are well worth seeing live, as they establish themselves, they can only continue to get better.”

-Mancunian Ways

Top 100 book selling author of paranormal erotica on Amazon -

I am so proud to be able to say this at last

For a new writer Ms Flame appears to have a good knowledge of her subject, and imparts this to her readers in a well paced and accessible way. The little asides, and flashes of humor give the narrative a lift, punctuating the rapid sexual action and adding a true and human sense of realism to her story lines.

For lovers of BDSM based erotica that is not too heavy or extreme these 3 stories give easy but intelligently written entertainment, with a variety of sexual action. I hope Ms Flame erotic writing skills will continue to develop; I suspect she is a writer to watch.

 Sizzling! 5* Review

This is three stories under one cover. They are all unique erotica, each more sizzling than the last. Vivienne’s was all about other worldly encounter. The second story, Sarah gets to live her darkest fantasy when she inadvertently spills the bean to her new lover, and finally, there’s a young woman’s journey into the land of BDSM. Lovers of Erotica will have a fun time.

Chad Lindberg - Actor Interview

Bio

Chad Lindberg was born in Mount Vernon, WA on November 1st 1976 and lives in Los Angeles. He is an actor, producer and is extremely popular with his fans. He has been in the film The Fast & The Furious, I Spit on Your Grave, various TV shows, movies and played Ash in Supernatural. His character Ash was SO popular he returned to the show after lobbying by his fans on Twitter.

In any of the films you have appeared in, was there ever a part you particularly coveted? One that really made you think "I could have really got my teeth into this part!" Or if not is there any character in other films you would have loved to play?
One of the Films I'm most proud of is "I Spit on Your Grave." It gave me a chance to do a Character I've never done before and also be apart of such a controversial Film. I rode a fine line playing someone with a Mental Handicap. I wanted to portray him honestly and respectably.  It was one of those Acting experiences I will never forget. The hairs on the back of my neck would stand up on end during filming certain scenes. My fellow Cast mates and I would just look at each other in disbelief.
Talking about "MY Big Break" you stressed that making a documentary like this had had such a big impact on your life! Are you still in close contact with the other *stars* of this documentary? Can you tell us a little about the impact it made?
Yes that Movie is a huge part of my Life. I feel very thankful that Tony, the Director, was able to have the perseverance and the passion to see it to it's end. Over ten years in the making.  I think it needs to be required viewing for anyone who's looking to get into Acting or the Film Business. Watch this Movie and then ask yourself if you really want to pursue it. It's a very raw and honest look into Hollywood. Yeah I keep in touch with most of my former Roommates from time to time.  Every person in that house was very impactful on making me who I am today. Here's the Movie's Website. www.mybigbreakmovie.com
I noticed you talk about your family quite a lot on Twitter. Do you think they ground you? You seem so *normal* if you don't mind me saying that?
Haha!! I appreciate that. I don't feel normal most of the time but I know what you mean. Yeah my family is the most important thing to me. They keep me grounded and have been extremely supportive over the years. I go back to WA to visit and ground myself as much as I can.
I see that you have worked on a huge amount of my favourite programmes and genres from supernatural to fantasy. Have you a particular favourite genre amongst these?
I don't have any particular genre that I aim for as an Actor or that I tend to favor.  It seems that my Career has pulled me into the "Supernatural" Genre which I'm really thankful for. I'm a huge fan of the Paranormal in my own life so it makes sense. Also I think the "Supernatural" genre has the BEST Fanbase.
You say you would like to play an alien such as Starman or KPax. Have you looked at any scripts or books with a view to finding your ideal role?
I haven't seen or read anything that suits that particular role yet. The role of an Alien coming to this World and adjusting to human Life has always fascinated me.  Cried like a little baby when I was younger and saw E.T. It really had an impact on me. I'm remember my parents having to take me out of the back of the Theater because I was crying so hard. Haha!!  The Movie "Starman" with Jeff Bridges is one of my all time favorite Movies of all time. That's something I want to do. A movie like that.  I'm pretty weird so I think playing an Alien has got to be in the cards for me at some point. Or it's quite possible that I'll be an evil Alien with tons of make up and spend 6 hours in a make-up chair. Either way...it'll happen.
Have you earmarked any future films or programmes you would like to produce?
Yeah I have a few ideas now that I'm producing with friends. ;) I definitely have ideas rolling around my head that I'd like to see happen.
Have you a particular favourite television programme that you follow? One that you record and watch at leisure?
I'm a huge fan of "Ghost Adventures". I never miss an episode and my DVR is full of them. I'm also a huge fan of "Sons of Anarchy". That show is truly Badass. I also love "Trailer Park Boys". Hands down one of the funniest TV Shows of all time in my opinion.
Your latest film is Becker Farm that is due for release in 2014. Can you let us know anything about your part in this production?
I play "Adam Becker" who is a recluse Farmer during "World War 2" set in Nebraska. It's an adaption from a Book by William Timmons and we start production very soon.
I see that you are coming to London for Asylum 11 between 1st - 3rd November 2013 The Renaissance Hotel Heathrow. Are you looking forward to the visit and will you be doing anything like sight seeing whilst you are here in the UK?
It sounds like a fantastic event. Yes I'm very excited to come to London to hang out with my fans. It's always an absolute blast when traveling over Seas. It's extra special because it will be on my Birthday Nov. 1!! I'm hoping to spend an extra few days in London so I can see some of the Sites and not have to travel back home so fast.  I try to make it where I don't have such a quick turn around.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?Just enjoying Life with family and friends. Continuing to work and grow in this crazy place called "Hollywood."

This is an interview I undertook for Skelat  but just wanted to share it again.

Great guy to interview

Smut in the City, well...in the city of Manchester that is

I attended my second reading slam event ever, on Saturday 24th October in Manchester. The day began at the Bangkok Bar & Restaurant at  40 - 44 Princess St, Manchester M1 6DD, then on to Chapter One Bookshop Cafe, for the evening event.

The event was organised by Victoria Blisse and her husband Kev, and it was a pleasure to attend as everyone is so welcoming.

Chapter One is situated in the Northern Quarter of Manchester on Lever Street at Chatsworth House, 19 Lever Street, Manchester, United Kingdom, M1 1BY

To say I was a tad nervous is a major understatement. I, of course had a large glass of red wine for Dutch courage, prior to reading my piece. Although I know I wasn't the only nervous one that day.

More about Smut

Why should you visit a smut event?
--------------------------------------------------
Aural Pleasure! That’s why! It’s a wonderful way to stimulate your mind. Our Reading Slams feature incredibly talented writers from the world of Erotica and Erotic Romance reading out short excerpts from their published stories to tease, inspire and delight you. You never know quite what you might hear next and where that might lead you, it’s a fabulous way to discover new authors, new books and maybe even new genres for you to explore.

Visual Pleasure! We'll have fabulous performances to tease, inspire and delight you. Educational Pleasure! With informative workshops and demonstrations, you'll not only experience but you'll learn as well. Coming away with new ideas and new skills.

Fabulous Goodie Bags were be provided to the first 50 guests who arrive on the day.

They had  delicious food & snacks and various drinks offers available at the bar throughout the day.

The day began proper at 11.25 with a welcome from the Queen of Smut Victoria Blisse.

Next up at 11.30am was a teaching session from Liv Honeywell and Ashley R Lister. This was a session with instruction on how to write, and also with instruction of how to go about reading in public. The two as you can well imagine are very different things. This was an interactive workshop and very informative. A boon before I myself had to perform also.

Lunch was 12.15 until 1.15 pm, and a chance for people to meet and greet a little more, and reconnect with others that I had met at Sexibition in August. Sexibition was the first time I had read a piece from my books in public.

There were three reading slams in total, and I was rather glad that I was in the first one, but not the first performer. That way I could then chill with another large glass of red wine and enjoy the other performances.

Those performing in the three reading slams were Bella SettarraKay JaybeeScarlett Flame, Zak Jane KeirVictoria BlisseK D GraceLiv Honeywell Erotica, Ashley R Lister, Helen J Perry, Deana CarrollJanine Ashbless - author pageAnna Sky EroticaLucy Felthouse and Slave Nano.

The time limit for the readings was 5 mins and if you went over your allotted time, you gort spanked. Needless to say I DID go over - Bad girl.

The event was also attended by a number of bloggers including Just_Indecerous , Horny GeekGirl, Lola Sparkles, and Anna Sky. Check out their blogs please.

Unfortunately Jennifer Denny who was due to read but couldn't attend the event, so graciously, she has allowed me to post the reading slam she would have read out at the event. Enjoy.

This is from a story I have out at Christmas, called Naughty Christmas Wishes. The setting for this story is that Fay, an old fairy from the top of the Christmas Tree, has been discarded in favour of a brand new angel (ahhhh!). She goes to a paranormal bar to drown her sorrows and sees four hunky elves. Closing her eyes she makes a wish…

I wish, for once, that a young, handsome elf would be interested, and not see me as an ageing fairy, ready for the scrapheap…
A hand fondled her neck and Fay jumped.
As she turned to see who was touching her she nearly fell out of her seat when she saw it was King, one of the elves.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“I saw you sitting here by yourself. No-one should be on their own at Christmas. Can I get you a drink?”
For a few moments, Fay couldn’t talk—unable to believe her ears. Was the most beautiful, and sexy, creature in the room really talking to her?
King smiled down at her and her pussy flooded. “Of course, if you are waiting for someone else, I’ll leave you alone.”
She clutched his arm to steady herself—well, to stop him leaving, in actual fact.
The elf wrapped an arm around her waist.
Holy Christmas! That is soooo good.
She leaned in toward him.
“Join us?” he said, nodding at his friends who were all waving her eagerly to come to their table.
“Sure.” Fay’s voice was very husky as King led her over.
Part of her mind was flabbergasted wondering if her wish had been granted.
Surely not? Her wishes never get answered. But just in case the wish fairy was working extra time this Christmas, Fay quickly made another one.
Please, please, can I have sex with at least one of these gorgeous hunks tonight?
“So, Fay, what’s a lovely fairy like you doing in a joint like this?”
As she raised her eyes to the ceiling, the other elves all hooted and slapped Ringo on the head.
He looked incredulously at them. “Well, I meant, it’s Christmas Eve. We rarely see any fairies in here at this time of year.”
Everyone turned to look at Fay with matching expressions of curiosity.
Fay shifted uneasily. “Umm. Well, I kinda lost my job.”
King rubbed her back. It felt marvellous. “Kind of? Or for real?” he asked in a quiet, soothing voice.
She shrugged. “For real, I guess. They took me down off the tree and put a shiny new angel in my place.”
Elliott swiftly stood up, the legs of his chair screeching as he propelled it backwards. “How dare they throw you out in the street?”
Fay flushed. “Actually, they didn’t throw me out. Just shoved me in a corner. I’m the one that left home.”
King wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tightly against his body. She could feel his cock. It was large and hard and she wanted him badly.
“I could be corny like Ringo and say, no-one puts baby in the corner, but I think baby made her own way out of the corner.”
She giggled and hugged him back, pressing her pelvis into his. Meanwhile, Elliott came around the table to cuddle her from behind. Fay didn’t know whether to push into King or press back into Elliott.
Then Ringo stood and moved to stroke her hair, dipping his head to nibble her earlobe. Fay was unable to breathe as waves of lust came over her. Taking a shuddering breath, she glanced over to Harvey, who gave her an incredibly sexy grin that made her legs start to fold.
“Whoa. Are you tired or something?” asked King in worry.
Fay held tightly onto King’s strong arms as he stepped back to check her out. “I’m fine, really. Just a little overwhelmed with all the attention.”
Ringo crossed his arms and leaned back against the table. “Seems to me some ‘attention’ is exactly what you need.” He smirked and dipped his head on one side. “How about it, King? You can attend to one part of our Fay. I can attend to another. E.T and Harve can do their thing, too.”
Their thing? What exactly is that, Fay wondered, as her breathing started to accelerate to racing car speed at the thought of having not one elf, but all four?
King cupped her face. “Sounds good to me, if Fay is up for it?”
She couldn’t talk, just nodded her head vigorously.
As they led her to the hotel rooms upstairs, Fay gave a final wish.

Please let me keep up with all of them. Or keep them up, at the very least…

A number of stalls were at the Bangkok Bar & Restaurant including Kink Craft, Nippleicious, Dark Rose Desires, Karen Stockton, Ian THE Smut Peddlar (and Lucy Felthouse his glamorous assistant) Roissy Workshops - RWN, Mistress Cara Sutra and Crafts on caffeine. The whole day was a huge success, and well worth attending.

I made myself a very fetching flogger in purple and black, with the able assistance of Kinkcraft, and it was mine to keep for free.

We were treated to a burlesque performance from Blue Belle Burlesque and also had a workshop with Zak Jane Keir about "Word Building" in regard to Historical/paranormal/Sci-fi/Steampunk wrirting. A very valuable one for myself as my next book has all those genres and sub-genres in it.

Of course there was the ubiquitous Dungeon that gave me both a thrill and some trepidation.

Also attending this event were a number of bloggers, including Justin Decorous,

The event wrapped up about 6pm and we were led crocodile style through Manchester to the next venue, and after party in the Northern Quarter by Dr Sketchy himself.

The Chapter One bookstore is an utterly amazing venue, and much bigger than I expected. I was very pleased to visit as I am there in January next year for a pop-up book signing event.

The evening performances were ably supplied by the two gorgeous gals from Monster Cirque. They were Bea Noir and Kitty Retsnom.  Bea opened with an amazing, sensual  pole dance, after which we had the opportunity to sketch a picture of her. Needless to say my sketching abilities to not match my writing abilities and I failed to win any prizes, but had a lot of fun taking part.

We were then entertained by an exotic belly dance, reminiscent of the
dance of the seven veils, performed  by Kitty Retsnom. We then did two sketches of Kitty, one of her upper torso and anther of her, beautifully posed. There were some very professional sketches produced by members of the audience.

The final act was provided once more by Bea, dressed as a very sexy clown and dancing and posing ( scarily) on a bed of nails. We once again attempted to capture her likeness as she posed, on said bed of nails.

All in all a fantastic enjoyable day and evening was had by all. Can't wait to meet up with all these amazing folk again very soon.  Photos from a variety of sources included D N Photography Manchester
